L'auteure-compositrice-interprète et multi-instrumentiste d'origine capverdienne, suédoise et afro-américaine elevée à Los Angeles a passé toute son enfance entourée de musique, ses parents étant à la fois chanteurs et compositeurs. l'âge de 13 ans, Varner jouait de la guitare, écrivait et enregistrait ses propres morceaux. Elle a fréquenté l'Amazing Grace Conservatory à Los Angeles, une école privée d'art de la scène pour jeunes de couleur, et a été membre du très prisé Vocal Jazz Choir de la Hamilton Music Academy. Plus tard, elle a étudié au département de musique enregistrée Clive Davis de l'Université de New York. En 2012, son premier album Perfectly imperfect monte à la 4ème place du top américain. Elle remporte son premier Grammy en 2017 pour son travail avec Chance the Rapper sur son album Coloring Book. Après avoir travaillé avec Da Internz, Pop & Oak, DJ Camper, Nineteen85, et bien d'autres, elle revient enfin avec son deuxième long format. Elle compte bien continuer à forger de nouvelles voies créatives sur ce projet très attendu qui compte la participation de Wale et Rapsody.
